The list below includes some resources that may help you find free/low-cost equipment.

I acknowledge that the cost of backpacking is a significant barrier, especially for college students. Hopefully, these resources can help combat or reduce the barrier of cost.

I also acknowledge that outdoors is largely considered a "White" space and that representation of BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, low income, etc. communities, is few and far inbetween. Hopefully, this list is encouraging and provides you with a sense of community in outdoor recreation. 

  • Making Adventures Possible for All Students (MAPAS)
    • MAPAS is an UCSB organization dedicated to promoting accessibility & inclusivity in the outdoors. 
    • UCSB students can borrow backpacking equipment from MAPAS -- contact MAPAS via email: mapas.ucsb@gmail.com​
  • UCSB Adventure Programs​
    • Adventure Pass & Outdoor Gear Rentals​
      • The Adventure Pass is UCSB's "Netflix" for adventure. Get 12 months of UNLIMITED rentals for only $59/ $199 (UCSB Students/ Everyone Else)​

  • Facebook Market Place; Facebook UCSB Free/For Sale; Craigslist
    • People are always selling their old equipment. Sometimes, sellers are willing to negotiate the price of their items. If you visit these sites from time to time, you may come across a good deal! ​
  • Isella Outdoor Consignment (Instagram)
    • Similar to the last bullet point, this is an instagram/website page that sells used outdoor equipment at a reduced cost.​
  • REI Rentals 
    • If you don't want to invest backpacking equipment, renting gear might be a good option for you. â€‹
